What is "backset" when discussing door hardware.

A backset is the distance from the edge/face of the door to either the centre of the spindle hole of an existing door or the same from the edge of either a lock or tube latch to the centre of the spindle hole. there are 3 main sizes, 45mm, 60mm (most common) and 70mm. Probably would have been better described as the "setback".
